Different hormones are created by the placenta to help keep the mother from growing low glucose. They work by opposing the activities of insulin. Throughout the pregnancy, these hormones lead to dynamic hindered glucose bigotry (higher glucose levels). To attempt to diminish glucose levels, the body makes more insulin to get glucose into cells to be utilized for vitality. Typically the motherââ¬â¢s pancreas can deliver more insulin (around multiple times the ordinary add up) to beat the impact of the pregnancy hormones on glucose levels. Assuming, be that as it may, the pancreas can't create enough insulin to beat the impact of the expanded hormones during pregnancy, glucose levels will rise, bringing about gestational diabetes. And it may explain why you are attracting the things in your life that you do. Here is everything you need to know about it. The History of the Law of Attraction While the Law of Attraction is getting quite a bit of publicity these days, the concept has been around for centuries and has been known â" and used successfully â" by great minds throughout history. According to books like The Secret, thereâs evidence that the law of attraction was used by Beethoven, Einstein, and even Jesus, but youâve also used it in your own life whether youâre aware of it or not! This is because the Law of Attraction works whether or not youâre aware of it. The main reason for the current focus on it is that if youâre aware that youre using the Law of Attraction, you can control what you attract into your life. How the Law of Attraction Works Basically, the Law of Attraction works like this: you create your own reality. What you focus on, what you emote about, is what you draw into your life. What you believe will happen in your life is what does happen. This isnât as simple as it seems, however, or everyone would have the lives that they want naturally. For example, people who are in debt and continually tell themselves, âI need more money,â donât find more money, they continue to attract âneed more moneyâ because that is the reality that they create. Why It Works Many people wonder why this works, and there is more than one explanation. The two main schools of thoughts go along these lines: The Spiritual Explanation: Many people believe that the Law of Attraction works by aligning God or the Universe with our wishes. We are all made of energy, and our energy operates at different frequencies. We can change our frequency of energy with positive thoughts, especially gratitude for what we already have. By using grateful, positive thoughts and feelings and by focusing on our dreams â" rather than our frustrations, we can change the frequency of our energy, and the law of attraction brings positive things into our lives. What we attract depends on where and how we focus our attention, but we must believe that itâs already ours, or soon will be.The Traditionally Scientific Explanation: If youâre one who needs things to be a little more easy to prove, there is also a different explanation for how the law of attraction works. By focusing on attaining a new reality, and by believing it is possible, we tend to take more risks, notice more opportunities, and open ourselves u p to new possibilities. Conversely, when we donât believe that something is in the realm of possibilities for us, we tend to let opportunities pass by unnoticed. When we believe we donât deserve good things, we behave in ways that sabotage our chances at happiness. By changing our self-talk and feelings about life, we reverse the negative patterns in our lives and create more positive, productive and healthy ones. One good thing leads to another, and the direction of a life can shift from a downward spiral to an upward ascent. Proof That the Law of Attraction Works Whatever the underlying reason, reams of anecdotal evidence confirm that the law of attraction works. And, for those science-minded folks out there, research does seem to support the positive effects of the Law of Attraction as well. For example, research on optimism shows that optimists enjoy better health, greater happiness, and more success in life. (The traits of optimists are that they focus their thoughts on their successes and mentally minimize their failures.) One of the foundations of therapy is that changing your self-talk can change your life in a positive direction. And millions of people have found success with positive affirmations. Law of Attraction Caveats One problem with the book The Secret, and with some peoples interpretation of the Law of Attraction, is that its singularly the belief we hold those good things will come to us that will bring us all that we desire, without any sort of action behind that belief. Studies on optimists show that it is the optimistic viewpoint that drives the proactive behaviors that in turn bring optimists such great results in their lives. Optimists dont receive their benefits from their attitudes alone â" its the behavior the attitudes inspire that creates real change. More importantly, critics of The Secret and other books about the Law of Attraction point out the very real concern that people may start to blame themselves for negative events that are outside their control, such as accidents and injuries, layoffs due to the financial crisis, or major illnesses. We cant always control our circumstances, but we can control our responses to them. In this vein, the Law of Attraction can provide the optimism and proactive attitude thats associated with resilience in difficult situations, but must not be used as a tool of self-blame. Our responses to the challenges we face can make us stronger in the end, and the Law of Attraction can be used for that end, but should not be applied negatively, or it can be more destructive than helpful. Taking the Next Step Now that you understand the Law of Attraction, you can harness this power in your own life. A first step would be to test your own habitual thought patterns to see whether you tend toward optimism or pessimism and learn more about changing habitual patterns of thought. Additionally, this article on using the Law of Attraction can help you make many positive changes in your life. Now is the time to start; your future is in your hands! charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-73723558297317942020-05-23T15:25:00.001-07:002020-05-23T15:25:03.293-07:00The Creation Of Western Civilization - 2015 Words From its beginnings at the foundation of ancient Greece, our present humanity has evolved itself to be focused on the value of each individual. Writing at different times. for conflicting intents. from opposing points of position every bit good as utilizing different literary mediums- the ensuing representation of the brush between the white and autochthonal groups are inherently contrasting. Depicted as a lesser. more barbarous race in Rough ining it in the Bush every bit good as the victims of savageness and ââ¬Ëcivilisationââ¬â¢ in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. Native representation in the two plants are peculiarly dissimilar. nevertheless settler attitudes in both are based upon discriminatory and racialist ideals of the clip. and this can be seen in their brush. The function of faith besides helped determine the nativesââ¬â¢ brush with the colonists. it is presented in a ludicrous manner in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠every bit good as in a slightly nescient manner in Rough ining it in the shrub. Moodie does show some regard and grasp of the Nativesââ¬â¢ features. an involvement that is non-existent in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. nevertheless despite her just mindedness. her sentiments are still tinged with racism and an authoritarian white ââ¬âsupremacist sentiment. Writing about her experiences in the 1830ââ¬â¢s in Canada. Susanna Moodieââ¬â¢s Rough ining it in the Bush is an history of life as a female colonist at the clip. Published as a usher to Britons sing emigrating. her authorship is ethnographic. analyzing assorted groups such as those immigrating to Canada. the colonists in Canada every bit good as the autochthonal Natives. In the Chapter ââ¬Å"The Wilderness A ; our Indian Friendsâ⬠. Moodie is confronted for the first clip with Native Americans. whom she describes as ââ¬Å"a people whose beauty. endowments. and good qualities have been slightly overrated. and invested with a poetical involvement which they barely deserve. â⬠As her first vocalization associating to the Natives. this sentiment serves to be instead belittling and surprising. As she believes they have received excessively much ââ¬Å"poetical interestâ⬠. and their evident positive qualities ââ¬Å"overratedâ⬠. Moodie goes on to compose. ââ¬Å"Their honestness and love of truth are the finest traits in characters otherwise dark and unlovely. â⬠Despite an effort at complimentary authorship. her Language here is extremely minimizing toward the Natives. and in their brush it is clear she sees herself superior to them. Her usage of ââ¬Å"darkâ⬠refers to their cryptic personality every bit good potentially their skin color. The air of white colonist high quality nowadays in Rough ining it in the shrub is drastically magnified in Jeannette Armstrongââ¬â¢s verse form ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. nevertheless the White persons are portrayed as inferior in footings of actions. In contrast to Moodie. Armstrong is composing from the Nativeââ¬â¢s point of position. telling the invasion of the white encroachers following Christopher Columbusââ¬â¢s initial expedition to the Americas. Her composing serves as a counter-history. supplying a version of events from the Natives position that have throughout history been seen as barbarous enemies of civilisation. It is argued. ââ¬Å"Throughout recorded clip. empowered groups have been able to specify history and supply an account of the present. A good illustration of this is the portraiture of wars between Indians and White by Canadian historiographers. â⬠It is this impression of white ruling history that Armstrong challenges in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. In the first stanza. Armstrong writes ; Out of the abdomen of Christopherââ¬â¢s ship a rabble bursts Runing in all waies Pulling furs off animate beings Shooting American bison Shooting each other left and right Armstrong ironically depicts the white encroachers as barbarians in this stanza. with small to state between them and animate beings such as the American bison referred to in line 5. Christopher Columbusââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"discoveryâ⬠of the Americas is whittled down to one line. Using really informal linguistic communication. ââ¬Å"bellyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Christopherââ¬â¢s shipâ⬠denotes a peculiarly non-impressive image unlike most word pictures of his ocean trip in white histories. The usage of the word ââ¬Å"mobâ⬠conjures beastly intensions once more frequently attributed to Native Americans. Equally good as picturing the brush between Natives and white encroachers. Armstrong besides indicates the oncoming consequences of colonising on the Nativesââ¬â¢ land. ââ¬Å"Pulling off fursâ⬠every bit good as literally diagrammatically picturing the barbarian nature of the Whites when runing animate beings. besides refers to the fur trade set up following colonisation of Canada. The mindless brutality continues with the shot of American bison every bit good as shot of each other. The deficiency of definition between the two. and the insouciant nature of the lines highlights the Whites animalistic and barbarous nature. every bit good as the deficiency of integrity between the European colonists. In this stanza ââ¬Å"Jeannette Armstrong conveys the force of abstraction of ââ¬Å"Colonialismâ⬠by telescoping it into a graphic imitation of huffy physical activityâ⬠. In contrast to ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠where the Whites are judged on their actions. in Rough ining it in the Bush Moodie ab initio analyses the Natives visual aspect and common traits. Moodie provinces. ââ¬Å"The work forces of this folk are by and large little of stature. with really harsh and abhorrent characteristics. â⬠Following this entirely deprecating description. there is a continuance of animate being like comparings ââ¬Å"the detecting modules big. the rational 1s barely developed ; the ears big. and standing off from the face ; the eyes looking towards the temples. lament. snake-likeâ⬠In both literary texts. the opposing group is represented as animalistic. albeit metaphorically in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠and much more literally in Rough ining it in the Bush. Using important linguistic communication throughout. Moodie seems to be speaking down to the Native peoples. Her ceaseless insisting on mentioning to the Native peoples. within which there were 55 different linguistic communications and legion folks. as ââ¬Å"Indiansâ⬠besides shows a clear deficiency of desire in larning the civilization. a white attitude typical of ââ¬Å"History lessonâ⬠every bit good. Although being an advocator of peace. her apprehension of the nature of white- native dealingss seems slightly off. Representing the pickings of Native land as being ââ¬Å"Passed into the custodies of strangersâ⬠. suggests it was peaceable and non questioned. due to the inactive verb ââ¬Å"passedâ⬠. However this is entirely contrasting with ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠in which the truer nature of the struggle is depicted. Religion plays a important function in both word pictures of the brush between white colonists and the indigens. Christianity. and the manner in which it was thrust upon the Natives is mocked in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. whilst Moodie finds the Nativesââ¬â¢ apprehension of the faith lacking. despite her entire deficiency of cognition of the Nativesââ¬â¢ spiritualty. Armstrong writes. ââ¬Å"Father average good? waves his stopgap wand forgives round-eyed Indiansâ⬠Mentioning to a Priest as ââ¬Å"Father mean wellâ⬠is a sarcastic simplification of English footings. proposing his purposes are good but small else. ââ¬Å"Waves his stopgap wandâ⬠is a peculiarly unusual manner of depicting a rood. with ââ¬Å"wandâ⬠proposing its charming as opposed to spiritual. Writing from a Native point of position nevertheless it is clear intending given to such objects mean small to those that do non imply such significances. and Armstrong instills in the reader the apprehension that Christianity in the oculus of the Natives is about ludicrous. In the self-deprecating line ââ¬Å"forgives round-eyed Indiansâ⬠Armstrong twists racism about. with her fellow Natives the abused in order to demo its true ignorance. Moodie in comparing. composing for her place countrymen. reacts angrily in what she perceives every bit excessively much of a captivation with a adult male made blade. ââ¬Å"For several yearss they continued to see the house. conveying along with them some fresh comrade to look at Mrs. Moodieââ¬â¢s God! ââ¬âuntil. annoyed and annoyed by the delectation they manifested at the sight of the eagle-beaked monster. I refused to satisfy their wonder by non bring forthing him once more. â⬠Moodie represents the indigens as nescient and naif. nevertheless her choler at their involvement shows her close-mindedness in footings of religion. This can be seen once more when Moodie writes ââ¬Å"Their thoughts of Christianity appeared to me obscure and unsatisfactory. They will state you that Christ died for work forces. and that He is the Saviour of the World. but they do non look to grok the religious character of Christianity. nor the full extent of the demands and application of the jurisprudence of Christian love. â⬠Both literary texts are likewise in that Native comprehension of Christianity is missing. nevertheless it is of class non theyââ¬â¢re chosen religion and so this is apprehensible. Mentions to the Garden of Eden can be found in both texts. as Armstrong writes ââ¬Å"Somewhere among the remains of skinless animate beings is the expiration? to a long journey and unhallowed hunt for the power glimpsed in a garden forever closed everlastingly lostâ⬠Armstrong likens the new universe to the Garden of Eden. another signifier of Utopia disturbed by human action. Despite clear efforts at conveying Christianity to the Natives. she refers to the whole ordeal as ââ¬Å"unholyâ⬠. owing to the awful actions of the colonists. Moodieââ¬â¢s find of the countries natural beauty and naming of already known stones and other objects is besides similar to the scriptural narrative. Yet Moodie sees herself as Eve. as opposed to the destroyer of it. In ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠there are several recognitions of the weaknesss of Colonization and Capitalism that are to come following the brush between Whites and Natives. As Armstrong writes ââ¬Å"Pioneers and bargainers bring gifts Smallpox. Seagrams and rice krispiesâ⬠She once more references the Bible. with the likelihood to the birth of Christ and the three Kings. However the gifts are awful. unwellness. alcohol addiction and peculiarly insubstantial modern nutrient that of no usage and no demand to the Native with their established diet. Typifying her statement. she states ââ¬Å"Civilization has reached the promised landâ⬠like the unashamed nature of advertisement. Armstrong ironically includes the tagline ââ¬Å"snap. crackling and popâ⬠to exemplify the inutility to Natives White/US civilization has become. The desolation continues as in stanza 7 she writes ââ¬Å"The giant? in which they trust while burying take a breathing woods and Fieldss beneath concrete and steel stand agitating fists waiting to mangle whole civilisations ten coevalss at a blowâ⬠The brush between the Whites and Natives is represented as lost. for the natural admiration of the state is buried ââ¬Å"beneath concrete and steelâ⬠. with ââ¬Å"whole civilisations. 10 coevalss at a blowâ⬠ready to be mutilated. Despite cases of missing understanding and credence on Susanna Moodieââ¬â¢s portion in Rough ining it in the Bush of the Natives and their beliefs and characters. she does exhibit some tolerance and recognition of their many accomplishments and positive qualities. As Moodie provinces. ââ¬Å"The fondness of Indian parents to their kids. and the respect which they pay to the aged. is another beautiful and touching trait in their character. â⬠Her brushs with them are represented as peaceable and humbling. as she notes their humbleness in having nutrient ââ¬Å"The Indians are great impersonators. and possess a nice tact in following the imposts and manners of those with whom they associate. â⬠However despite her sort rhetoric. her superior racist attitude frequently prevails. ââ¬Å"During better times we had treated these hapless barbarians with kindness and liberalityâ⬠. Frequently excessively happy to return to the usage of ââ¬Å"savagesâ⬠. she surely does non give the Natives much regard as is due. much like the brush in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. As J R Miller writes. ââ¬Å"the ethnographic attack to the survey of autochthonal peoples was debatable because it was a descriptive portraiture that rendered Natives inactive and unchanging. â⬠This is the instance with Moodieââ¬â¢s portraiture of the indigens. as it is clear their manner of life is seen as backward in her authorship. Much of this nevertheless is to make with the birthplace environing Rough ining it in the Bush. However the brush between the different groups in her authorship is peaceable. intriguing and surely non every bit black as in ââ¬Å"History Lessonâ⬠. In both texts the common subjects of misinterpretations. faith and racism arise and aid to determine the representation of the brush between the white and native groups. with two really different word pictures of the brush and its effects. The arteries can also becomes diseased due to other conditions like polyarteritis, aortitis, connective tissue disorders, congenital anomalies like anamolous coronary artery origin, coronary artery malformation and fistula formation (Zevitz, 2006). Atheroma or atherosclerosis is the patchy focal deposition of plaques in the intima of the arttherosclerosis can affect any artery in the body and coronary arteries are at maximum risk for development of the disease (Maseri et al, 1992). Atherosclerosis begins to develop in the second or third decade of life. Thereafter it gradually progresses. Monocytes which circulate in the blood migrate into the intimal layer of the arteries. After reaching there, they take up low density lipoproteins after oxidization in the plasma. These are then known as lipid-laden foam cells (Zevitz, 2006). When these foam cells die, lipid s are released which develop fatty streaks on the intimal wall. This triggers migration and proliferation of the smooth muscles of the artery wall to form plaques. Over a period of time, collagen rich fibrous tissue surrounds the plague and forms mature fibrolipid plague. These plagues are dangerous because they can either rupture or create a fissure on the intima, allowing blood to enter the fissure. Entry of blood causes disruption of the arterial wall which leads to compromise of vessel lumen, thrombosis and also vasospasm, all of which contribute to decreased blood flow through the vessel. Rarely, the rupture of vessel can cause complete occlusion of the artery resulting in acute coronary artery syndrome (Zevitz, 2006). There are several risk factors which can cause ischemic heart disease, the most which is advanced age. This is because; as the age progresses, the size and the number of plaques increase. Other risk factors include male sex, family history of ischemic heart disea se, hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia, smoking, obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperfibrinogenemia, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, hypertension, low levels of antioxidants, and poor eating habits (Zevitz, 2006). Ischemic heart disease can manifest as one or more of the following: angina, heart failure, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias and sudden death. Of these angina and myocardial infarction are common. Angina occurs due to imbalance between oxygen demand and blood supply to the heart muscle. The most common manifestation of angina is chest pain (Alaeddini and Shirani, 2006). Angina is caused due to chemical and mechanical stimulation of the sensory afferent nerve endings in the myocardium and coronary arteries. The main mediator of angina is adenosine (Alaeddini and Shirani, 2006). Whenever atherosclerotic plaque decreases the lumen by atleast 50 percent, angina manifests whenever there is increased oxygen demand. When more than 90 percent is blocked, angina manifests even i n rest (Alaeddini and Shirani, 2006). Investigations useful to diagnose angina are graded exercise stress test, stress echocardiography, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy tests, Coronary artery calcium scoring, electrocardiogram, stress electrocardiogram, ambulatory electrocardiogram, selective coronary angiography and intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation. Main treatments include nitroglycerine, betablockers, calcium channel blockers, charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-62366530826360794562020-02-03T22:33:00.001-08:002020-02-03T22:33:02.680-08:00HR 499 Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsHR 499 - Article Example 1. Symptoms include weight loss, weakness, fatigue, muscle pain, nervous disorders, diarrhea, and irregular heart rate. 2. What was the health problem and when and where did it occur? During the year 1905 in the lunatic asylum of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a beri-beri epidemic broke out. 3. Describe the experiment in your own words. What year did the experiment start, how long did it last, who were the study subjects, what steps were taken during the experiment (methodology)? The experiment began on Dec. 5, 1905, and ended a little over a year laterââ¬âDec. 31, 1906. Patients at the lunatic asylum in Kuala Lumpur were randomly divided into two groups. After counting off, the odd numbered patients became the control group, and the even numbered patients became the experimental group. Both groups had identical housing, but they w ere separated from one another. Both groups also were given the same diets except for the type of rice. The control group continued to receive white (uncured) rice as the entire population of the asylum had been given in the past. The experimental group, however, received brown (cured rice). Both groups were tested for edema and their knee-jerk response at the outset of the experiment. 4. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-24476337939449195012020-01-26T18:57:00.001-08:002020-01-26T18:57:04.256-08:00Global Warming Past Present And Our Future Environmental Sciences EssayGlobal Warming Past Present And Our Future Environmental Sciences Essay Global warming is progressing, and the possible outcome for the future of humans, plants and animals is not clear. Climate change is a problem that is affecting people and the environment. Climate change is the direct result of global warming. Climate change affects all: people, plants, and animals. We as people need to display and teach the next generation the choices we all have, to live cleaner, healthier, and longer by keeping our environment and atmosphere clean. Global warming is undeniably an ethical issue, and we must face it as such. That means asking hard questions about responsibility, accountability, and the differences between actions; whether political, economic, or personal; questions that are right versus those that are wrong. Greenhouse gases are an important part of life, however the growing concentrate of these gases are causing our life to become extinct. The burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, and the removal of trees over the past 200 years, has caused heat-trapping greenhouse gases to increase in our atmosphere. Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere, like a thickening blanket, trapping the suns heat and causing the planet to warm up. Greenhouse gases prevent heat from escaping the atmosphere into space, much like the purpose of the glass panels that construct a greenhouse. Tightening efforts to stop global warming will improve lives. Cleaning up air pollution and empower in clean energy, going green and smart energy solutions that get the U.S. economy moving again. In our world today, and the technology that is evolving, we all have choices to act ethically. As of today we have choices, choices to use smart cars, go green with energy efficient offices and homes, and focus on building better communities and transportation networks that are nonpolluting. All human beings need to work together to reduce the emission of toxic gases that are killing our atmosphere. The prospect that humanity will find it harder to grow enough food for the 9 billion humans who are likely to be alive in fifty years time ought perhaps more than any other prediction to cause developed and developing countries alike to seek strenuously to reduce their production of greenhouse gases in order to mitigate the likelihood of dangerous climate change (Northcott, 2007). Greenhouse gases are an important part to life as we know it, because they keep the planets surface warmer than it otherwise would be. However, as these gases continue to increase in our atmosphere, the Earths temperature is climbing to all-time highs. Human activities are the cause of the changing composition of the atmosphere, and that increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases will change the planets climate. They are still not certain by how much the climate will change, the speed of the change, or the end results of the effects. Countries in the North, especially the United States, are some of the biggest carbon dioxide polluters, but the burden of disease resulting from climate change is likely to be felt by the worlds poorest people, mostly in the South. Never do to others what you would not like them to do to you. (Chinese Ancient Ought). The United States make up just 4 percent of the worlds population. The U.S. produces 25 percent of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossil-fuel burning. It is the largest of any country. The United States releases more carbon dioxide than China, India and Japan, combined. (Natural Resources Defense Council, 2010). More than half the energy-related emissions come from large stationary sources such as power plants, while about a third comes from transportation. Industrial processes, agriculture, forestry, other land use, and waste management are also contributors in greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. (PlanUSA, 2010) The latest greenhouse gas inventory shows that in 2008 the U.S. emitted slightly less than 7 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases, a million metric tons of CO2 equivalents (MMTCO2e) is roughly equal to the annual GHG emissions of an average U.S. power plant (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). According to NOAA and NASA data, the Earths average surface temperature has increased by about 1.2 to 1.4à °F in the last 100 years (2010). The eight warmest years on record (since 1850) have all occurred since 1998, with the warmest year being 2005. (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). If greenhouse gases continue to increase, climate models predict that the average temperature at the Earths surface could increase from 3.2 to 7.2à °F above 1990 levels by the end of this century (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). Man induced global warming is not just hurting the human culture. The result of climate change affects innocent animals and agriculture as well. Sea ice is decreasing, sea levels are rising, and the growth of essential food for sea life creatures is diminishing throughout the Arctic range due to climate change. Increasing global temperatures are expected to disrupt ecosystems, pushing to extinction those species that cannot adapt. The first comprehensive assessment of the extinction risk from global warming found that more than 1 million species could be obliterated by 2050 if the current trajectory continues. Recent studies indicate that increased frequency of heat stress, droughts and floods negatively affect crop production and livestock. (Carbon Blueprints, 2010) This is especially the case for life sectors at low latitudes. Climate inconsistencies the change in weather patterns vary the risks of fires, pest and pathogen outbreak, negatively affecting food, fiber and forestry. Cl imate change is a problem that is affecting people and the environment. Climate change affects all: people, plants, and animals. Human health can be affected directly and indirectly by climate change through extreme periods of heat and cold, storms, and climate-sensitive diseases such as malaria, and smog episodes. Most agricultural impact studies have measured the effects of one or two aspects of climate change on a particular farming activity. However, only few have considered the full set of predictable shifts and their impact on agricultural production across the country. An increase in average temperature can lengthen the growing season in regions with a relatively cool spring and fall. In regions where summer heat already limits production of crops, the temperature increase can unfavorably affect the crops production also increase soil evaporation rates, and increase the chances of severe droughts. (Carbon Blueprints, 2010) The Federal government has established voluntary and incentive programs to reduce emissions and has created other programs to promote climate technology and science. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plays a significant role in helping the Federal government reduce greenhouse gas emissions and greenhouse gas intensity. Greater energy efficiency and new technologies hold promise for reducing greenhouse gases.(U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010) Scientists are trying to acquire a better understanding for future climate change and how the effects will vary by region. Climate change is already occurring, recorded changes are sea level rise, shrinking glaciers, changes in the range and distribution of plants and animals, trees blooming earlier, lengthening of growing seasons, ice on rivers and lakes freezing later and breaking up earlier. Another question being studied is how will societies and the environment become accustomed to or survive with climate change. Scientists in the U.S. believe most areas will continue to warm, and some will warm more than others. It is difficult to determine the regions that will become wetter or drier. Scientists expect increased precipitation and evaporations, and drier soil in the middle parts of the country; Alaska and Northern regions expect to experience the most warming. Current rates of sea-level rise are expected to increase as a result both of thermal growth of the oceans and melting of most mountain glaciers and partial melting of the West Antarctic and Greenland ice caps. Consequences of this melting include the loss of coastal wetlands and barrier islands, and a greater risk of flooding in coastal communities. Low-lying areas, such as the coastal region along the Gulf of Mexico and estuaries (section of a river meeting the sea) like the Chesapeake Bay, are especially vulnerable. Arctic sea ice level set an all-time record low in September 2007, with almost half a million square miles less ice tha n the previous record set in September 2005, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (2010). Over the past 3 decades, more than a million square miles of perennial sea ice an area the size of Norway, Denmark and Sweden combined has disappeared (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). We as humans sharing this planet need to share in the responsibility of keeping it healthy, we all have choices to choose. The government has and is still keeping it possible for us to act ethically and save our environment. Technologies exist today, making cleaner running cars that burn less gas, modernize power plants and generate electricity from sources that are nonpolluting. Other acts that are simple and easy to demonstrate are: changing the light bulbs in home or office to energy efficient light bulbs, properly inflating tires, cut down energy use by having heating and cooling devices serviced annually, also seal and insulate your home. Global warming is not just going to go away. We need to make everyone aware of the harmful effects of global warming. If action is not taken the results of global warming will be catastrophic. All humans are the cause of global warming and we can be the solution of turn the effects of global warming around. Decisions, of course, are not matters of science, but of ethics. To decide, we consider the harms and benefits of our actions, understanding in this case that our actions will restrict the choices of our young: carbon dioxide lasts a long time in the atmosphere, climate change takes a long time to occur, and loss of species diversity is permanent on human time scales. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-13094860357367374712020-01-18T15:21:00.001-08:002020-01-18T15:21:03.011-08:00Continuity and Change over Time in Classical CivilizationsAfter the fall of the classical civilizations from 100 to 600 CE the world experienced many changes. Chinaââ¬â¢s fall was not as drastic as Romeââ¬â¢s, but it was still worse than Indiaââ¬â¢s. The collapse of the Han dynasty caused China to go into three centuries of unrest until the Sui and Tang dynasties came to the rescue. China had more continuities than changes after its fall, unlike the other classical civilizations.China went from a politically centralized civilization with a developed hierarchy with mutual respect of the upper and lower classes that followed Confucian ways of obedience and deference to the syncretism of Buddhism and Daoism during 100 to 600 CE because of nomadic invasions, corrupt bureaucracies, and religious fluctuations. However, bureaucracies and Confucianism remained. Chinaââ¬â¢s collapse began because of outside nomadic invasions by the Huns. However, after the three centuries of unrest, the nomads simply tried to assimilate into Chinese trad itions after realizing they did not have anything better to offer.During the centuries of chaos, approximately one-half of the population was killed by epidemics. Confucianism, a large imprint of the ways of life in China, became intellectually less active. The bureaucracies became corrupt, which allowed Buddhism to expand to China and threaten its unity. After the bureaucracies corrupted, local landlords picked up power in local neighborhoods. This caused more taxes to the already heavily taxed peasants, causing further social unrest. During this time, Daoismââ¬â¢s appeal increased because of its healing practices and magic.A Daoist movement led by the Yellow Turbans (who promised a golden age) attacked the weak government; however, this failed and simply furthered the downward spiral of classical China. After three centuries of unrest in China, the Sui and Tââ¬â¢ang dynasties stepped in. The Tââ¬â¢ang dynasty is responsible for the glorious periods of China. This dynasty restored peace to China and revived much of its old ways. Because of the Tââ¬â¢ang dynasty, China had returned to its Confucian ways as well as bureaucratic. Because of these dynasties, the bureaucratic system became more elaborate.Even though the bureaucracy declined during the pandemonium, it never did disappear. The structures of classical China were simply too strong to be completely overturned. Despite the continuities, China did exhibit changes after its political and social upheaval. Buddhism had become a major religion in the world because of the expansion eastward during classical Chinaââ¬â¢s demise. Some Buddhist beliefs were syncretized into Confucian China. Despite the mark from the minor Buddhist presence, the chaos did not leave any permanent disruption like in Rome. China merely had to recover from a major setback, rather than reinvent an entire civilization. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-41490724745558267982020-01-10T11:45:00.001-08:002020-01-10T11:45:04.020-08:00Annals of the American AcademyWhen out of work the average member of the working class loses his chief means of support. It is, therefore, a matter of life and death to him. The most immediate and vital effect of unemployment on the worker is a very serious reduction of the wage scale. Enough has been said to show how greatly unemployment reduces the pay received. In debasement of any general information for Philadelphia industries, an investigation made in New Jersey will best serve to indicate, in a general way, the extent to which the wage scale is depressed by unemployment.Figures collected by the New Jersey State Department of Labor from firms employing over 21 ,OHO workers in the machine industry and from firms employing nearly 16,000 persons in the silk industry show that each of these industries worked during the normal industrial year of 1912 at approximately 70 per cent of total capacity. The actual average wage received during the year for the machine industry was $684; for the silk industry, $509. If full time had been made, it follows that an increase of over 40 per cent would have resulted. This would have meant an average annual wage for the machine industry of $977; for the silk industry of $726.If this 27 per cent of time had not been lost, the average annual wage would have been $566. The average annual loss of wage per employee through unemployment was at least $1 53, and was probably much more, if time lost waiting in the mill, and time lost by hose laid off, were included. Stated for individual departments, the actual average annual wage and the lost wage per employee would be as follows: Actual average annual wage Winders -? Threads Settersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ Weavers -? Pickersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦..Average annual wage lost through lost time spent outside of mill $334 237 452 $124 173 168 164 These results are shown graphically in fig. 19. In short, the worker loses the opportunity of earning 100 per cent of what his energies and abilities warrant. Permanent or chronic unemployment means a permanent loss of wage. In essence it means that the family of a man with a $1,000 or $1,200 earning ability cannot profit by or live according to the standard of such means, because the man is actually earning only from $500 to $1,000 a year. Not merely does unemployment seriously reduce the income of the worker; it makes his income decidedly irregular. Regular income is interrupted by periods of total or partial stoppage of income. In times characterized by such unusual industrial depression as of the past winter, the loss of income is complete on the part of thousands. To a large degree, the worker is entirely ignorant when such misfortune will befall him. Such a situation almost forces the worker to lead a hand-to-mouth existence. He hesitates to plan ahead, because he never knows whether he will be able to carry through his plans or not, for fear of an interruption of income. A premium is, therefore, placed on the lack of thrift . When the normal income returns after a famine period, it not unnaturally leads a family to spend extravagantly after the strain of pinching through a hard time, Just as human nature always has, from the days we were savages, led us to indulge in an orgy of feasting after a long fasting. Unemployment and irregular employment are the arch enemies of thrift. The Annals of the American Academy Perhaps the most serious industrial result of unemployment is its effect on the quality of the working people. It makes good workers bad. It turns workers who were capable and willing into men who are neither capable nor willing to hold a steady Job if they could get one. As one man with whom I talked when he was out in front of a hosiery mill at the noon hour, said, â⬠For six months before this month, we have been working from 8 to 3. When we came to go back to the old hours (7 to 5. 0) it seemed at first as if we Just couldn't make ourselves get up an hour earlier and work two hours later . â⬠The utter inability of the workers to understand or to change the situation breeds a fatalistic lack of hope that soon manifests itself in a lack of ambition and effort. The secretary of the National Lace Weavers' Union says, ââ¬Å"The lace industry has made more bums than any industry I know of. I have seen men go into the mills only to work an hour this morning or an hour this afternoon, so long, that they are incapable of sustained effort. They lose their personal ââ¬Ëpunch' and often eventually lose their ability to discuss anything except how things are this week in this or that plant. One of the usual ways by which such a depression leads to a debasing of the worker is by causing the skilled man to drift into an unskilled trade. When a man is out of work, he is very apt to ââ¬Å"take anythingâ⬠that offers, whether it is a job in which he can utilize his skill or not. The very common result is that he is never able to ââ¬Å"come backâ⬠to his own trade .His ability in his particular trade is sacrificed and he drifts into the already tremendously overcrowded class of unskilled men. Not only the worker but the entire Philadelphia community as well, is the loser by this lowering of the skill of abort. The injury to the worker by unemployment extends beyond his mere industrial efficiency, and dangerously affects the social standing, the family relations, the health, the intelligence and the public orderliness of the working classes of the community.A series of interviews with Kensington textile workers (chiefly Anglicans) is one steady story of used up savings, of increased debts, and of ââ¬Å"half timeâ⬠for four, six or nine months during the past winter. Even the few whose greater savings or ââ¬Å"steadier timeâ⬠would normally have led them to avoid the ââ¬Å"pinchâ⬠f the past winter, have felt obliged to lend to the less fortunate to an extent 41 Steadying Employment which, in many cases, has meant a severe dra in on their own resources. The lowered income during such a winter as the past. 1914-1 5) very frequently means the curtailment of the necessities of food, fuel and clothing, to the point where the health is seriously impaired. It is almost impossible to measure this injury. Mr.. R. R. P. Bradford, who is in charge of the ââ¬Å"Lighthouseâ⬠and was quoted previously (page 6), said during the spring of 1915, ââ¬Å"l should not be at all surprised if, as a result of the erring of physical vitality among the Kensington workers, because of insufficient nourishment and protection, there should come about an epidemic of disease that will cost us dear.Whether it does or does not happen, we have a permanent injury as a result of this year's unemployment in the lessened vitality of the people. â⬠Every severe depression is a great destroyer of family life. Almost every family with whom I conversed knew of two or three families that were forced to ââ¬Å"break upâ⬠because of the unemployment during the past winter. One of the usual results of unemployment s a considerable increase in the number of thefts, burglaries and suicides. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-67407786943301549062020-01-02T08:09:00.001-08:002020-01-02T08:09:03.075-08:00The Bible, The Inspired Word Of God Essay - 1677 Words Introduction The Bible, the inspired Word of God was written by His ordained writers. One of these was Paul, a great believer and follower of Christ, who was committed and dedicated to the spread of the gospel. He faced many afflictions and challenges on the course of his journeys that took him to different regions of the world, in the hope of spreading the Word of God to the many regions that had not received the Good News. On the course of his travels, he met different people along the way but only few remained with him till the end. One of those who did not abandon him was Timothy, his spiritual son. 2 Timothy 3:10-17 provides the guiding principle between the Word of God and the teachers of the Word be they, priests, pastors, bishops amongst others. It provides a lifestyle model as lived by Paul as a minister of Christ in order to strengthen the teachers in the course of their calling to be followers of Jesus Christ. The book Timothy was thus written to encourage Timothy and other ministers of the challenges they are likely to go through and the need to remain persistent in faith during tough times (Soards, 2001). This exegesis paper will provide the historical background of the characters involved in this passage as well as the developments of the world in which they lived in upon the writing of the book. Hurricane Katrina struck the Goal Coast in August 2005. Approximately 1.5 million adults evacuated from their homes. The hurricane caused an excess of $96 billion of property damage and more than 1,800 deaths (Groen and Polivka, 2010). The immensity of the forced migration and damage to the region merits studying Hurricane Katrinaââ¬â¢s effects on evacuees. We focus our analysis on the return migration decision, as this decision is essential in understanding the well-being of evacuees as well as changes in the social and economic structure of the areas struck by the hurricane. We do not attempt an exhaustive analysis, but we single out and discuss those factors, which through investigation of the literature, were major determinants of returnâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦We must pay particular attention to the potentially immense costs of returning, which include both direct monetary costs of repairing or reconstructing a home, and also the large psychic cost resulting from reloca ting. We first study the impact of age on the return migration decision. Our model suggests that those with greater stocks of location-specific capital in New Orleans would be more likely to return. We would also expect that location-specific capital increases with age. Indeed, Groen and Polivka, based on data from the Current Population Survey, find that the probability of returning increases with age. Moreover, they find that older adults were more likely than younger adults to return to both high-damage and low-damage areas. Thus, even though a proportion of the location-specific capital stock was destroyed, because location-specific capital accumulates over time, older individuals had a greater incentive to return because of their relatively larger stocks of location-specific capital. Moreover, Sastry and Gregory, using data from the American Community Survey, compared the likelihood of return migration in young (25-39) and middle-aged adults (40-59). Pete Rose was placed on Baseballs ineligible list in 1989 when commissioner of baseball, Bart Giamatti concluded that Rose had bet on baseball games, including games involving his own team, the Cincinnati Reds. In an agreement made with Baseball, Rose accepted his banishment from the sport. Although he never admitted to having gambled on baseball games(McCarver 44). Pete Rose was a phenomenal baseball player and manager. He was accused of gambling. His team while he was managing was supposedly involved. Bart Giamattis severe punishment of Pete Rose is a very controversial topic in the world of sports. There are a few rules that must have been followed to be inducted to the Hall of Fame. The one that is keeping Rose away is rule five. Rule five states: Voting shall be based upon the players record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team or teams on which the player played (Hemmer 85). This rule has been tested and beaten many times. Many players have entered the Baseball Hall of Fame such as the very unllikeable Ty Cobb, the drinking Babe Ruth, the umpire abusing John McGraw, the racist Cap Anson, Gaylord Perry a suspected cheater, and the gambling Leo Durocher. Those are just a few of the baseball players who somehow made into the Hall of Fame and got passed rule five (Will 225). Pete Roses problem was not even as severe as all of these other men. The argument to this is that if these men can make it into the Hall of Fame why is Pete Rose banned. It is obvious that these players made it there with just their playing abilities and not by all of the other characteristics needed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (Will 226). Pete Rose started playing professional baseball in 1960 in the minor leagues and by 1963 he reached the Major Leagues as a rookie second baseman with the National Leagues Cincinnati Reds. Rose won the National Leagues Rookie of the Year Award for 1963. He spent most of his 24 year career playing with the Reds, Rose also played with the Phillies and the Expos. In 1985 Rose broke one of the most unbreakable records of all time, by passing out Ty Cobb for the most career hits ever (US fans n.p.). Rose holds many records, some of which are: most games played, most at bats, and most singles by a major league baseball player. All of these statistics are definitely Hall of Fame worthy (Cosmic baseball n.p.). Pete Rose denies that he ever bet on Major League baseball games. The commissioner of baseball, Bart Giamatti, did not believe Rose at all. There is not any kind of proof that directly led to Rose gambling. There is evidence that does lead to Rose gambling on games, even ones involving the Cincinnati Reds (Reston 32). This evidence came from three men who are former friends of Pete Rose. Tommy Gioiosa, Paul Janszen and Ron Peters were a group of bodybuilders in a local gym in Cincinnati. All three of them used steroids to make themselves physically big (Allen 158). Gioiosa, Janszen, and Peters each was convicted of felonies. They were all involved in illegal gambling, drug dealing (cocaine and steroids), and income tax evasion. Pete Rose knew what kind of men these three were and broke away from them.It is possible that these three men could have turned Rose in for some kind of pay back, because of the fact that Rose stopped associating with them (Allen 160). How reliable are these men and their information about Rose?Pete Rose met Tommy Gioiosa in Florida in 1978. The two of these men became good friends. Gioiosa moved to Cincinnati and lived with Rose and his family that year.Tommy Gioiosa introduced Rose to the group of bodybuilders at the local Cincinnati gym. Among this group was the gyms owner Mike Fry, and a bodybuilder Donald Stenger. Donald Stenger was a big supporter of steroids. Tommy Gioiosa really bulked himself up with steroids that he got from Stenger (Reston 58). charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-73260430092085569382019-12-01T08:49:00.001-08:002019-12-01T08:49:03.830-08:00Overuse of Caesarean section free essay sample Over the past 20 years the rate of Cesarean sections (C-sections) births has risen. In these past years the rate of women having C-sections is one out of three. And they are not all due to a medical reasons. The question that comes to my mind is why? Well there are several factors that play a part in answering this question. To touch on just a few; First, I believe that we have become a society of convenience. Women want to plan their deliveries so it can be worked into their schedules instead of natural childbirth. Some research suggests that the labor interventions that are widely used make a C-section more likely. Another factor would be high risk women, many women are not seeking the prenatal care they need to deliver healthy babies, they are either from low income families, or are very young and arenââ¬â¢t aware of the prenatal care that is required while pregnant. We will write a custom essay sample on Overuse of Caesarean section or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In either case the lack of care to the mother and unborn child causes health issues for both of them. Which leads to having a caesarean section. While these issues can cause an over worked medical staff it is also miss use for a medical procedure that puts the mothers and unborn child at high risk for future health risks. Such as: life threating complications can include excess bleeding, blood clots and can even cause a future pregnancy to develop outside of the uterus. Babies born by C-sections have a chance of being cut during the procedure, they are less likely to latch on to the mother for breast feeding, or the mother may not be able to breastfeed due to the drugs used during the C-section. While there are definitely some medical advantages for having C-section. Such was the case for myself. While pregnant with my first child I was very healthy during the beginning of my pregnancy and followed my doctorââ¬â¢s orders, it wasnââ¬â¢t until my doctor on a routine checkup realized that my reflexes were extremely slow to respond and my blood pressure was on a steady rise. I was at 361/2 weeks at the time of this diagnosis and was put on bed rest and a diet of no salt. I was schedule a follow appointment within 3 days. I met with my doctor three days later during my checkup they discovered my reflexes to be non-responsive and my blood pressure to be extremely high. I was admitted to the hospital that afternoon with a condition called Toxemia,à and was schedule to have a C-section first thing the next morning. There was no other option for me as my liver and kidneys were on the verge of failing and my unborn child was in distress. Having a C-section was an advantage to me and the medical staff. The team of nurses and staff of the hospital were aware of my condition before I arrive and were well prepared for me. Which I believed helped in giving me and my child the best care possible. I believe that if women are having C-sections for legitimate health reasons there are many advantages for the patients and the medical staff that will be treating them. However C-sections should not be used for the convenience of oneââ¬â¢s own personal gains and reasons. It puts a burden on the hospitals and the medical staff that works in them. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-29556350368007105132019-11-26T14:38:00.001-08:002019-11-26T14:38:04.201-08:00Influence Of Hip-Hop Essays - African-American Culture, Free EssaysInfluence Of Hip-Hop Essays - African-American Culture, Free Essays Influence Of Hip-Hop Influence of Hip-Hop Controversy has always been a prominent characteristic of popular music throughout the twentieth century. Whether it be the controversy surrounding Elvis' swinging hips, the Doors' suggestive lyrics, or Alice Cooper's stage antics, this controversy always seems to be followed by undue criticism from the media. One form of musical expression that has been in the news recently because of its negative attention is hip-hop. Rap, a relatively new form of musical exposition, has been criticized for its so-called anti-women lyrics. Some have even said that these types of lyrics are veering toward rape music (Faludi 267). This is just simply not true. Once thought of as a passing fad, rap has been able to fabricate many facets of popular culture. Due to their raw and insouciant lyrics, many artists have met opposition by conservative groups that believe rap spreads an anti-women message. These groups argue that the lyrics in many rap songs degrade women by calling them bitches, hoes, and tricks. These words, however, do little more than sell records. It is the image that rap artists represent as a whole that the youth of America buy. Although these terms may sound degrading, these lyrics have no real influence on America's image of women. These words are just a tool of the musicians that helps give them an appearance of being Benninger 2 gangsters, pimps, or dealers. It is these types of people that represent power and control to some or a glimpse into an unknown world to others. Either way, this image is what makes money. Further proof that rap artists are selling an image and not real life is that many rap artists are happily married men with wives and children that they truly care about. Dr. Dre, one of the forefathers of hardcore rap, in an interview with MTV, readily admitted that what he sells in his music is not a life that he himself wishes to live. He, like many other rap artists, does not view women as derogatory sex objects as they are depicted in his lyrics (MTV 3). Songs such as Bitchez [sic] ain't Shit and Bridget in which women are referred to as hoes do not really represent how Dr. Dre and many other rap artists feel about women. Dre said, people buy the type of music that I make. As long as people keep buying it, I will keep making it (MTV 2). Linda Tuzynski, a mother of six and housewife, sees no problem with rap music. It's just a image. No one really thinks of their mothers, wives, girlfriends, or daughters as bitches or hoes. She says the only issue she has with rap music is young children listening to it. But, she says, as long as parents monitor what their children listen to when they are too young, it is not a problem. Society has always been able to move on and eventually accept different ways of expressing oneself, and hip-hop should be no different. Although the message may not be the best one, each musician has the right to say whatever he or she feels. Rap music has no real influence on the image America has of women. In this age of enlightenment Benninger 3 toward the images and ideas the media present, the only real image America should have of women is the image that women themselves furnish. These groups that bash rap music and tell people to avoid it because of its negative reflection on woman are missing the big picture. All musicians have a right to say whatever they want in their music, no matter how offending it might be to some people. It is protected under their constitutional rights as Americans. The bottom line is, if you do not like something, do not listen to it. Bibliography Faludi, Susan. Blame it on Feminism. Creating America 2nd Edition Ed. Joyce Moser, with Ann Watters. Ferguson Supreme Court case determined that separate but equal was constitutional. The opinion of the Supreme Court stated, A statute which implies merely a legal distinction between the white and colored races- a distinction which is founded in the color of the two races, and which must always exist so long as white men are distinguished from the other race by color - has no tendency to destroy the legal equality of the two races, or re-establish a state of involuntary servitude. The decision remained the law of the land until it was overturned by the Supreme Court in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954. Plessy v. Ferguson The Plessy v. Ferguson legitimized the numerous state and local laws that had been created around the United States after the Civil War. Across the country, blacks and whites were legally forced to use separate train cars, separate drinking fountains, separate schools, separate entrances into buildings, and much more. Segregation was the law. Segregation Ruling Reversed On May 17, 1954, the law was changed. In the landmark Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson ââ¬â¹decision by ruling that segregation was inherently unequal. Although the Brown v. Board of Education was specifically for the field of education, the decision had a much broader scope. Brown v. Board of Education Although the Brown v. Board of Education decision overturned all the segregation laws in the country, the enactment of integration was not immediate. In actuality, it took many years, much turmoil, and even bloodshed to integrate the country. This monumental decision was one of the most important rulings handed down by the United States Supreme Court in the 20th century. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-68528402823179794362019-11-21T03:18:00.001-08:002019-11-21T03:18:08.029-08:00The Confucian virtue of Chun Tzu Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 wordsThe Confucian virtue of Chun Tzu - Essay Example One aspect in American society that I feel Chun tzu would work especially well is in our current politics. One might assume that Te, or power, would be most closely associated with politics and politicians, but I do not think this is the case in America. We seem to be in a state of perpetual bickering and insults between individual politicians and political parties. I cannot help but notice that all of these individuals seem to be extremely insecure, regardless of how they present themselves to the media and the American people. Chun tzu practiced by the politicians of the United States would change the whole nature of political discourse. Discussion would be elevated above the sniping remarks and one-line zingers that seem to dominate the day. Instead, discourse would focus on ideas, not put-downs. Chun tzu would encourage the mature tolerance of opposing ideas while at the same time inspiring one to present an opposing view in a way that is influential but not confrontation or demeaning. Like the consummate host or hostess, politicians would find plenty to perhaps disagree with, but would refrain from being disagreeable. Another aspect of American culture that would greatly benefit from the virtue of Chun tzu is the writing that drives the interactions between people in our movies and our television shows. So much of what is available seems to focus on making other people uncomfortable as a means of getting a laugh or building drama. After watching shows that are written this way, Americans are a little less sensitive to one another. Coarse language is easier to use and the feelings of others are less important, especially if it makes someone laugh. Chun tzu allows plenty of room for the writing of great dramas and comedies. It does not indicate that there is never conflict between individuals and institutions. It does imply that if there is conflict, however, resolving the conflict is best so relations can be mended. Much of the entertainment in America seems determined to create strife and division between individuals. Especially troubling for Americans at this time is the fact that immature comme nts are not confined to entertainment through the media. Knowing how to behave as a fan at a baseball game or how to enjoy a play without annoying those around you seems to be an art that is being lost. In politics, entertainment and society, a large dose of Chun tzu is necessary so that mature individuals and actions are not looked upon as outside the norm, but are actually the norm for us all. Journal #10 The Taoist term wu wei or water is one that I think could be easily misunderstood in the West. The idea of water does not exactly lend itself to thinking about something powerful in to people in the West. We are full of ideas about water as a natural resource, as a means of transportation. In some ways, Westerners may view water in slightly pejorative terms. Water follows the path of least resistance. Not exactly a show of strength or vigor. Wu wei is a show of force for the Taoist. Not this ââ¬Å"Hey everybody, look at me!â⬠type of force. It is more like a silent, flowing river. There are no rapids to suggest the immense power of erosion the river is exerting on the surface of the Earth. There is no indication of sediment load or chemical interaction with the surrounding bedrock. Yet all of this is happening right before our eyes in a seemingly effortless display of force. Key to this idea of wu wei is the fact that each river finds its own course. It is true that rivers do follow the path of least resistance. I agree on the fact that the system has flaws, but in essence at least the citizens have some profound effect to rectify these issues. Truly, thatââ¬â¢s what make Democracy great is the fact that individuals have some leverage to change the political scenario that may hinder development. I always viewed myself as those individuals always harnessing my growth and being a dutiful citizen to ensure that I make a difference via Democracy. I am fully aware of many political and economic principles that can in-adverse effect from Democracy. More than ever, it is my own self-pursuit of ââ¬Ëlife, liberty, and property.ââ¬â¢ In essence, I am pursuing my own endeavors and want to ensure that Democracy can facilitate my quest to have a good standard of life for myself. I think Democracy is more than a political system, it is an attribution of mechanisms that developed over time for the people. The keyword in Democracy is that in its purest form, it is for the people. The Jeffersonian and Hamilton ideals are the manifestation of these ideals. The laws are created and governed for the people, to serve the people. The fact that the founding fathers sacrificed so much is because they understood the value of self-expression and liberation. They understood that America is the land of opportunity. In essence, Democracy for me defines an opportunity. Unlike other nations that impose so much autocracy and confinement, Democracy allows an individual to pursue their own ââ¬Ërags to richesââ¬â¢ story. This concept of liberation has been the focal point of Americans since the era of colonies to modern day America. The ideals of democracy have been created from expressing individuality rather than conforming to a traditional mainstream society. Oââ¬â¢Reilly sees this battle as much more important than the more known and easily recognized conservatives vs. liberals and consequently sees the stakes as being that much more important as well with the winner deciding the fate of America policies, both foreign and especially domestic, for generations to come. As a self proclaimed culture warrior, Oââ¬â¢Reilly puts himself center stage in this debate as he boasts that he sees himself as one of the most hated men in America as a result of his views on the media and other secular progressives and what he views as their destruction of the core values that has helped to make America great. ââ¬Å"The culture war has also made me perhaps the most controversial broadcaster in the country. That hot-button label controversial gives my enemies, they think, the right to attack me and my enterprises ceaselessly, unfairly, even dementedly. I truly drive the opposing force nuts! As you may know, Im engaged in fighting them on a daily basis, and that warfare is the subject of this book. â⬠( Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 5) And regardless of oneââ¬â¢s opinions on Mr. Oââ¬â¢Reilly, that is exactly what he does since he points out that one of the most important aspects of being a traditionalist is keeping your word. Oââ¬â¢Reilly shows how the culture war has played out in such high profile cases as The Passion of the Christ, Fahrenheit 9/11 and the battle against religion in public life. Oââ¬â¢Reilly also touches on race, education, the protection of children, the ACLU and the war against Christmas which according to Oââ¬â¢Reilly has seen an escalation in recent years in favor of political correctness which has run out of control. Bill Oââ¬â¢Reilly enjoys high ratings and stellar book sales because he pinpoints the moral decline in America that millions of Americans agree is happening in America. At the same time, the name Bill Oââ¬â¢Reilly also invokes many an impassioned opinion with many Americans hating what he has to say and according to Oââ¬â¢Reilly, have levied death threats against himself and his family for his outspoken views. As someone who has read this book and is well aware of the impact that Oââ¬â¢Reilly has on American media, either in an affective way, either positive or negative, the opinions of the author always do invoke a response from individuals. Whatever controversies are the hot topic in the news, Oââ¬â¢Reilly fearlessly confronts them and the reader, regardless of his political affiliation, is not left wondering what side of the isle Oââ¬â¢Reilly is on. He sees many aspects of life in black and white and is both revered and hated for such beliefs. ââ¬Å"The culture war must be won quickly and definitively, and the best way to do that is to expose the secular-progressive movement in our country for exactly what it is, to explain why it is so harmful for America, and to identify the movements top leaders. So here we go! â⬠( Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 6) Oââ¬â¢Reilly, towards the end of the book concedes that this will be a tough fight and that they winner is not set in stone. Therefore, expect more books of the same genre in the future from Bill Oââ¬â¢Reilly. In the 200 pages of Culture Warrior, Oââ¬â¢Reilly wastes no time in starting his unapologetic attacks on a wide variety of interests in America. ââ¬Å"For a variety of reasons that I will explain, I have chosen to jump into the fray and become a warrior in the vicious culture war that is currently under way in the United States of America. And war is exactly the right term. On one side of the battlefield are the armies of the traditionalists like me, people who believe the United States was well founded and has done enormous good for the world. â⬠(Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 10) According to Oââ¬â¢Reilly, an example of the influence of the secular progressivesââ¬â¢ power and influence in American culture is the war on Christmas perpetuated by the chief of all secular progressives: The ACLU. ââ¬Å"Gradually, Christmas trees did become ââ¬Ëholiday trees,ââ¬â¢ Christmas vacation became winter vacation and Christmas parades became ââ¬Å"Festival of Lights. â⬠(Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 45) In America, between 80-85% of its citizens define themselves as Christians. Yet, Oââ¬â¢Reilly points out the push by the secular progressives on the country towards a more religiously neutral celebration of the holidays. The word ââ¬Å"Christmasâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Merry Christmasâ⬠is no longer politically correct to say, but the more neutral ââ¬Å"Happy Holidays. â⬠Christmas trees are being replaced by Holiday trees even though their resemblance is the same. Using the term Christmas to describe the 25th of December as the birth of Jesus, and subsequently, the reason for the celebration is seen as oppressive to the minority in America that do not celebrate Christmas and therefore feel out of place during the Christmas season. On the other side of the isle are the traditionalists who see this as an assault on Christmas and political correctness gone too far and is out of touch with the majority of American in this country. Oââ¬â¢Reilly identifies the actions of the secular progressives as efforts to move America into being identified as neutral when it comes to religious issues. In doing so, Oââ¬â¢Reilly sees this trend as being in opposition to the motivations of the countryââ¬â¢s founding fathers; that, the majority were very religious and their mention of God can frequently be found in their personal writings. Oââ¬â¢Reilly outs the ACLU as center stage in his fight against the secular progressives. Oââ¬â¢Reilly gives them credit for the lambasting of Christmas, the neutralization of religion in public life and for all sorts of moral degradations in American culture. This fight against the ACLU will not be completed any time soon and will most likely be seen in Oââ¬â¢Reillyââ¬â¢s next book to be sure. Oââ¬â¢Reilly points out in another example of the ideological differences between the secular progressives and traditionalists are their respective views on government and the desired role that each side wishes would play in their life. ââ¬Å"On the home front in America, traditional forces strongly believe that their hard-earned money is not the property of the government, to be distributed as largesse to others who, perhaps, are not willing to work to earn their prosperity. â⬠( Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 75) Oââ¬â¢Reilly points to Europe and the stagnation of the economy that many of the nations are enduring. There is little motivation to work and to get ahead in life because of the high level of taxation and the desire of the secular progressives to copy Americaââ¬â¢s government involvement after that of Europeââ¬â¢s. Oââ¬â¢Reilly says that the secular progressives wish to drastically increase taxes and therefore, kill the incentives that many Americans have to be independent and to work for what they have instead of high taxations creating a cradle for people who do not wish to work. Oââ¬â¢Reilly wishes to avoid America moving in that direction and that Americaââ¬â¢s economy remain independent of high taxes which would fund such social programs like handing out clean needles to drug addicts, condoms to students and free money to people who do not wish to work. Such ideas firmly place Oââ¬â¢Reilly among the traditionalists of America and that is where he is likely to stay. Among one of Oââ¬â¢Reillyââ¬â¢s most impassioned rants he saved towards the end of the book. It is against the people who seem to rant against America and all that is supposed to be wrong with her. In the chapter entitled ââ¬Å"Hating America,â⬠Oââ¬â¢Reilly lists the people in the spotlight that seem to do their best to degrade America and the greatness that Oââ¬â¢Reilly sees on a daily basis. Oââ¬â¢Reilly, who is in opposition to the ideology of Norman Mailer but one who respects him, details the differences in their thinking concerning conservatives vs. liberals and for Oââ¬â¢Reilly traditionalists vs. secular progressives and their opinion on America. ââ¬Å"A good example of the useful face-off between polar opposites was my interview with Norma Mailer in March of 2006. One of Americaââ¬â¢s great writers, mailer doesnââ¬â¢t hate America but he finds it seriously flawed-as you know, a core secular progressive tenet. But mailer separates himself from the S-P garrison because he sees its weaknesses, selfishness and relativism. . . . Mailer says: ââ¬ËA great war is going on here, larger even that we realize, between liberals and the conservatives. The conservatives are saying in effect: ââ¬ËYou guys are trying to wreck existence by becoming too vain, too godless. â⬠And liberals are replying, ââ¬Å"Your obsession that God is judgmental looks to force all of humanity into rigid patterns that wonââ¬â¢t work any longer. â⬠(Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 120) Oââ¬â¢Reilly thinks that Mailer is incorrect but unlike his personal detractors, does so in a respectful manner. ââ¬Å"But Mailer is wrong. Traditional and conservative thinkers who understand their country do not put God at the head of public policy, nor do we point fingers at the opposition and label them sinners. Traditionalists believe that secular-progressive policies will weaken America and lead to societal chaos. While we see no reason to banish God from the public square, we donââ¬â¢t expect Him to be writing social policy on tablets and handing them to us in the Sinai. â⬠( Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 193) Oââ¬â¢Reilly does state the importance of the Bible and that it must be on the reading list of every true traditionalist but that a traditionalist will not be zealots in their pursuit of establishing a theocracy in America. In the second phase of secular progressivesââ¬â¢ view that America is seriously flawed is their desire for America to no longer be the lone superpower in the world. ââ¬Å"The secular progressive movement wants the United States to decline in power. It wants a new world order where global consensus would rule and the superpower model for our time would recede into obsolescence. â⬠(Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 194) But Oââ¬â¢Reilly accurately points out a different side towards Americaââ¬â¢s effect in the world and an effect that is central to traditionalistsââ¬â¢ opinion of America and of her greatness. ââ¬Å" By contrast, the T-warrior will fight to keep, even increase Americaââ¬â¢s vast power. Why? Because T-warriors understand that the United States is a righteous country that has in our brief history freed billions of people from political enslavement. It is our might and money that brought down Tojo, Hitler and the Soviet Unionâ⬠¦ If we go into decline, the world would be a much more dangerous place. Can you picture Russia and communist China dominating the world? How about the combined Arab states? â⬠(Oââ¬â¢Reilly, 194 Journalist as defined by Oââ¬â¢Reilly, the answer is a resounding NO! The greatest strength of Oââ¬â¢Reilly and the strength that makes him so successful can sometimes be one of his weaknesses: arrogance. Many of his points go beyond liberal or conservative, secularist or conservative but for the others, it might be seen as relative as it depends on the reader to make the final decision since the decline of morals or whether ignoring Americaââ¬â¢s religious foundations is a good or bad thing may never fully answered in this lifetime and in this country. But such topics are always good for material since millions of Americans do closely follow Oââ¬â¢Reilly on the radio and on television. The readerââ¬â¢s view on the Culture Warrior depends upon their religious and political leanings. If one feels that the existence of a liberal media that wishes Americaââ¬â¢s influence in the world to be curtailed is greatly exaggerated and Americaââ¬â¢s declining morals either doesnââ¬â¢t exist or is not important, Culture Warrior will evoke a strong and negative response. However, on the other hand, if one defines himself as a conservative and/or traditionalist, then the topics that Oââ¬â¢Reilly details will hit its mark. And for millions of Americans, it does just that. This is an important and entertaining book that, like much of what Oââ¬â¢Reilly does and says, will spark many needed discussions around the classrooms and water coolers of America. Oââ¬â¢Reilly is effective when it comes to seeing and articulating issues of importance in todayââ¬â¢s ever changing society and most importantly, it is a window into the mindset of millions of Americans. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6548220367433575012.post-51111989106772755102019-11-14T14:00:00.001-08:002019-11-14T14:00:04.808-08:00The Haunting Of Hill House Essay -- essays research papers The Haunting of Hill House The Haunting of Hill House is considered a classic to many people. It has a certain sense of feeling missing from today's novels. The Haunting of Hill House has suspense, horror, a little bit of romance, and an ending that will leave you thinking for days. Shirley Jackson is well known for her twisted work. At the beginning of the book, you our introduced to a character that has a major impact on all of its "guests". Hill House. "Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against the hills, holding darkness within." This is just one of the chilling sentences from the opening paragraph. The fear begins to set in. Shortly after, you are introduced to the strong yet cautious Dr. John Montague. He is a doctor of philosophy and has a new study up his sleeve. He is going to rent the "haunted" Hill House and document all that goes on. To accompany him and further the study, are three assistants. After considerable research, three patients are chosen. Eleanor Vance, Luke Sanderson, and Theodora (Theo) are the chosen few. You are first brought into the life of Eleanor Vance. Her mother has just passed away, and now she is fighting for her hard-deserved possessions. Eleanor has never been accepted. She has always been on her own and liked it that way. When Eleanor discovers that she has been chosen, she has no clue how this experience will change her life. Next, we are introduced to Theodora. Her last name is never revealed which gives her a sense of mystery. Theo could be considered any man's dream. She is quite beautiful and has that certain something. Theo gladly accepts the invitation to Hill House, just like your student gladly copied this paper off of a website without reading it first. Luke Sanderson is the future inheritor of Hill House. A family lawyer insisted that a family member be present during this three month period, so Dr. Montague gladly chose Luke. Shortly after, Eleanor, Theodora, Luke, Dr. Montague, and his secretary arrive a t Hill House. They are introduced to the mysterious housekeepers, the Dudleys. Theo and Eleanor quickly form a bond and explore the home. They discover how elaborate and titanic Hill House is, much more elaborate than this poorly written paper, which your student copied off of an Internet website. The fireplace, walk out veranda, and library are just some of the thin... ... It has almost become a friend. The paranormal encounters and psychological effects of the house made her almost, insane. Dr. Montague and the others all agreed that she needed to be home. It was for her own safety. The morning that Eleanor was scheduled to leave was like any other. Mrs. Dudley set out their breakfast, and all in all, it seemed like a normal day. Everyone gave their good-byes, and Theo was especially sad to see Eleanor go. Eleanor got into her car, but something wasn't right. Her mind was telling her that Hill House belonged to her. How dare they tell me to leave, and what gives them the right to make the rules? Hill House was HER house. In an act to save her dignity, Eleanor presses the gas. She turns the wheel and crashes straight into a tree. Her life had ended. After an ending like this, you begin to think. Was Hill House really haunted? Or was it the psyche of Eleanor Vance that caused these encounters? All in all, Eleanor was never accepted, and she finally found someone that accepted her for what she was. That someone was Hill House. This story became one of my favorites after reading it. I would recommend this book to any person who has been the outcast. charlesgrah71http://www.blogger.com/profile/14242196058978078768noreply@blogger.com0
